A School for "Magic-Seekers and Folklore-Lovers"

In 2016, folklorists and fairy tale scholars Dr. Sara Cleto and Dr. Brittany Warman created an online community for “magic-seekers and folklore-lovers” called The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic. They describe the school on their website: "The Carterhaugh School of Folklore and the Fantastic is an award-winning online school dedicated to classes on fairy tales, folklore, and all things fantastic." They aim to reach "those who dreamed of elven battles while studying economics, those who have always sworn they could see ghosts, and those who longed for a school of magic to send them an unexpected acceptance letter."

In addition to a blog, newsletter, and social media presence, the duo offers a course called Introduction to Fairy Tales as well as focused mini-courses. This January (2020), they are offering a course called Kindling the Light in the Darkness: Winter Folk Lore and Fairy Tales. The description of the course is enticing even for those of us in the warmth of Southern California: "We invite you to take shelter from the wind and snow, pull up a chair by our fire, and gather round for stories, fellowship, and rituals to warm you down to your toes."
